First Time in Southeast Asia? Start With This 5-Country Route

By Admin July 26, 2026 Travel Guides Comment (00)

Southeast Asia has a way of overwhelming first-timers before they've even booked a flight. Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia — where do you even start? The good news is, you don't have to pick just one. If you've got a few weeks to spare, there's a classic route that backpackers have followed for decades, and it happens to work perfectly for a first-timer too. Here's how to string five countries together without losing your mind.

Start With the Banana Pancake Trail

If you've spent any time researching Southeast Asia trips, you've probably come across the term banana pancake trail. It refers to the well-worn backpacker route through Thailand and Laos — named after the banana pancakes sold at nearly every guesthouse along the way.

Your trip should begin in Bangkok. Spend a couple of days exploring the city, and make time for khao san road — the legendary backpacker strip full of cheap eats, bars, and budget stays (guesthouses like d&d inn khaosan are popular first stops for exactly this reason). From Bangkok, head north to Chiang Mai for a slower pace, before crossing into Laos.

In Laos, Luang Prabang is unmissable. It's calm, temple-filled, and home to luang prabang laos's most photographed spot — kuang si falls, a series of turquoise waterfalls perfect for a half-day trip. This is where the trip shifts from "sightseeing" to actually slowing down.

Cross Into Vietnam

From Laos, most travelers cross into Vietnam and follow a classic vietnam backpacking route — north to south. If you're working with a vietnam itinerary 7 days, prioritize Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, and Ho Chi Minh City, in that order.

Hanoi's Old Quarter is worth two full days on its own. From there, book a halong bay overnight cruise — this is one of those experiences that photos genuinely don't do justice. Boats like ambassador cruise halong bay are well-rated for first-timers who want comfort without overspending, and a night on the water watching the limestone cliffs at sunset is reason enough to add Vietnam to your route.

End your Vietnam leg in Ho Chi Minh City, where the ho chi minh city war remnants museum offers a sobering, important look at the country's more recent history — it's heavy, but most travelers say it's one of the most memorable stops of the entire trip.

Head to Cambodia's Cultural Triangle

Next stop: Cambodia. This is where the trip turns from adventure into something closer to a history lesson. Base yourself in Siem Reap for the angkor wat temple complex — genuinely one of the most awe-inspiring places on the planet. Doing the angkor wat sunrise tour is non-negotiable; get there before the crowds and watch the temple spires light up as the sky changes color.

From Siem Reap, head to Phnom Penh. The phnom penh killing fields are a difficult but essential stop for understanding Cambodia's history — pair it with the S-21 museum for full context. If you have extra days, koh rong island offers a much-needed beach reset after a few emotionally heavy days of sightseeing.

Finish With Malaysia's Island Hopper Leg

The last stretch takes you toward Malaysia, by way of southern Thailand. Along the andaman coast, spend a few days in phuket and krabi — think limestone cliffs, longtail boats, and some of the best beaches in the region. Krabi phuket combined make for an easy, laid-back finish before crossing into Malaysia.

From there, take the penang ferry to langkawi or vice versa, depending on your route direction — both langkawi islands and penang george town offer very different experiences. Langkawi is beaches and duty-free shopping; Penang is street art, colonial architecture, and arguably some of Southeast Asia's best street food. Don't leave without trying char kway teow penang — it's a dish worth planning a meal around.

Bringing It All Together

That's your five countries: Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Malaysia — one continuous route that flows geographically and doesn't require constant backtracking. It's flexible too; if you're short on time, you can easily trim Laos or Malaysia and still have a complete first trip.

The real trick with a route like this isn't the destinations — it's the logistics. Visa rules, border crossings, and travel times between cities can eat up days if you don't plan them properly.

Thinking about attempting this route but not sure how to fit it all together? At Go Adventure Holiday, we specialize in building exactly these kinds of multi-country Southeast Asia itineraries — matching your timeline, budget, and interests so you're not stuck figuring out border crossings and cruise bookings on your own. Get in touch with us, and let's map out your first Southeast Asia adventure properly.
